I did not get into medical school!! Shocking!! I was the only one to get into a prestigious undergraduate university from my entire family. I had decent grades and MCAT scores. And yet I did not get into medical school. I was disappointed in myself. I was embarrassed to face family and friends who would ask me at every social gathering if I got any interviews. I stopped going to social gatherings. “You should not have picked such a difficult college.” “You should have done more research.” “You should apply to the Caribbean.” “My friend’s son received 20 interviews.” The unsolicited advice and comments kept coming. I stayed quiet and tried to understand why I wanted to become a doctor. If it was money, my bachelor’s degree could get me 2/3rd of that now and through other avenues such as Master’s or MBA, I could reach that level. But it was not money. Was it prestige? I could get that if I became a CEO of a company. But I just loved the field of medicine. I had taken Anatomy and Physiology, several courses in Molecular and Cell Biology, Physiology of Aging, and Endocrinology. No subject appealed to me as much as medicine. I had volunteered in several hospitals. Nothing compared to taking care of a sick patient. I could heal people if I entered the field of medicine. I made up my mind. I was going to become a doctor. I entered into a Master’s program and applied again. I made it to medical school. I am a doctor and I am so happy that I entered medicine for the right reasons and did not give up.
